Who We Are

Batala Zurich is a community-based samba reggae percussion group. Founded in 2024, we are part of the international Batala movement created by Giba Gonçalves in 1997, inspired by Afro-Brazilian carnival rhythms and powerful collective energy.

We are part of Batala Switzerland, together with our sister band Batala Geneva and belong to the global family of Batala Mundo, with over 50 Batala bands worldwide, all sharing the same music, values and spirit.

Though young, Batala Zurich is growing fast, powered by passion, diversity and a shared love for rhythm.

Our mission is to bring people together through music.

 We aim to create inclusive, accessible and joyful spaces where rhythm becomes a shared language and connection goes beyond words.

Through percussion, movement and collective expression, we build community in Zurich while staying connected to a worldwide network united by rhythm and respect.

Every rehearsal and performance is about collective energy, joy and expression. With commitment and dedication, members have opportunities to perform locally, nationally and internationally alongside sister bands

Batala Zurich is open to everyone, regardless of musical experience, background, identity or financial situation.

No prior drumming experience is required, curiosity, openness and commitment are what matter most.

We actively work to remove barriers to participation and foster an environment where everyone feels welcome, supported and empowered through rhythm.

Batala Zurich members come from Switzerland and six other countries from around the world, bringing together different languages, cultures and life experiences, united by rhythm.
